On this week’s show we talk about our recent trip to Sidmouth and how we went to visit the valley of daffodils and discovered the story behind Keith Owen’s legacy to the town.
We then move onto talk about Cornwall Council’s commitment to a single use ban across the council estate by 2020 and the motion set for 22nd February to ask Torbay to become plastic free. As part of this feature we also highlight the work of the Guardhouse Cafe at Berry Head, Brixham who are working on ways to reduce their carbon footprint and remove as much single use packaging as possible.
Keep Britain Tidy have their Great British Spring Clean on the weekend of 3rd and 4th March and we highlight the local initiative being run by Torbay Cleaner Coasts Initiative at Brixham Breakwater (this has now been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions).
Keep Britain Tidy have nominated litter heroes and Lilly’s Plastic Pick Up has been awarded this. Lilly is a youth ambassador for the Plastic Pollution Coalition and worldwide charity HOW Global. She also won the Green Feather from the Green Party and will be speaking to an international audience at a conference in Norway soon. Plus on her tenth birthday Lilly plans to celebrate with #LillysGlobalCleanUpDay with people from all around the world planning to get involved to help her celebrate.
The next section of the show includes a piece of audio which is a short interview with Christiana Figueres, a Costa Rican diplomat and Executive Secretary of the UN framework convention on climate change and who was instrumental in achieving the Paris Agreement in 2015. In the audio she eloquently and passionately explaining how ditching fossil fuels in favour of renewables is not only good for the planet, but also great for the economy and job creation.
We move onto local news and discuss the range of volunteering roles available to help run the Ageing Well Festival in Torbay. Roles include activities co-ordinator, communication/publicity co-ordinator, festival community engagement co-ordinator, speakers co-ordinator and volunteer co-ordinator.
We also share a date for your diary with a drop in day at The Lounge, Fleet Walk, Torquay on Friday 9th March from 10.30 to 4pm where carers are invited to come and chat with Daisy, Project Manager at Health and Care Videos about their new resource.
We then highlight the range of talks and activities at Torbay Museums under the banner of “Sharing Stories – a festival celebrating storytelling and writing on the English Riviera which takes place on 1st, 2nd and 3rd March.
We finish the show with the latest news on litter heroes Nadia Sparkes (Team Trash Girl), Wayne Dixon and Koda and Charlie Hamilton Cooper.
