Listen to the show:
On this week’s show we first shine the spotlight on 8 year old Tilly from Norfolk who has been out every day with her Dad during the half term at her local beach collecting litter. Tilly is one of many across the country who is taking action to reduce the amount of plastic pollution in our seas.
We move onto talk about Plastic Free Devon which is a Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) initiative which has launched in Devon and aims to reduce the plastic footprint of each Devon town. SAS wants to create 125 Plastic Free communities by 2020 as part of the Plastic Free Devon campaign, they want to see every town in Devon working this status, by appointing a leader and working up an action plan.
In our next section we share the news about a Hartlepool schoolgirl who has been hailed an inspiration after winning Keep Britain Tidy Litter Hero Award for 2018 for her efforts in the community. Jessica Stones, 10, was recognised for her work in establishing the Seaton Beach Squad which meets regularly to clean the beach at Seaton Carew.
Lyla Springate, a 10 year old girl from Greater Manchester is the next to be featured. Lyla, Sreeja Bhowmick and Eva Sarah Patten who call themselves the Planet Savers started a petition to garner support for meat free food to be served at their primary school and then wrote to their local authority who approved the move. The first Meat Free Monday was introduced at The Firs school on 8 January and 72 other schools in the area will also move towards Meat Free Mondays in September.
The next section of the show is where we feature a charity or community group which can be found on http://www.ododow.org, the interactive community map. This week we feature local charity Headway Devon who support people with a brain injury and who are facing complex physical, learning and emotional difficulties.
Headway Devon are recruiting for community support workers and volunteers and encourage people to visit Headway Devon for more details
On the topic of community we speak about a fantastic initiative called Chatty Cafe Scheme which was created by Alexandra Hoskyn. A Chatter & Natter table creates a space for people to talk – just simple interactions to combat loneliness.
