Show Highlights October 12 2017

In this week’s show we talk about the launch of the Torbay Bookclub for those with visual impairment which is a joint initiative from Torbay Council Libraries, RNIB, Friends of Paignton Library and VisualEyes which will be starting on 14th November at Paignton Library.

We then go onto talk about Guide Dogs for the Blind Week and the news that the charity has created My Guide service where they recruit volunteers to support someone who is visually impaired by accompanying them to lead their lives independently.

Having attended a Mental Health First Aid Training Day, Debbie shares some of the learnings from her training and then goes onto discuss a recent study from University of Essex which found that people with the lowest sense of wellbeing benefitted the most from being outdoors.

We share the good news that Africa is building a Great Green Wall which will be the largest living structure on Earth and a new Wonder of the World.

The second piece of good news for the planet is that more than 40 Catholic institutions announced the largest ever faith based divestment from fossil fuels, on the anniversary of the death of St Francis of Assisi.

In a feature on new innovations, we first talk about a portable language translation device which translates the words you speak in as little as 0.2 seconds and says them right back at you in another language.  We then share news of an edible biodegradable packaging from Evoware which is made from seaweed. The company’s mission is to create innovative solutions from seaweed to solve plastic waste issue while increasing the livelihood of Indonesia’s seaweed farmers.

Our next feature is a review of the film Prosperity which follows a new generation of companies that are doing the right thing and taking on the role of conscious companies.

We finish the show with the latest news from Pocket Guru who are focusing on body confidence this week and we discuss between ourselves in the studio what body confidence means to us.
